  Hawk was already up on his feet and stalking towards me. Before I could sidestep him, not that I was thinking about it, but you know- he swept me up into those big strong arms of his and crushed me against him.

  “Can’t breathe…” I managed.

  “I think the mother of your pup needs oxygen or things will end badly.” My mother announced and I groaned inwardly. I’d rather suffocate than have her crow that she helped me.

  “Sorry!” Hawk thrust me backwards and my equilibrium failed me. I pitched sideways; only for Hawk to snatch me back against him again. “Sorry!” He growled this time, at himself.

  “It’s fine. I’m used to things turning into a madhouse when my mother shows up.”

  “Good, because I’m staying.” My mother announced and I felt palpitations, big ones.

  “What? You said…” I spluttered.

  “That was before I knew you were carrying my grandchild and before your mate tried to suffocate you.”

  I made a sort of a squeaking noise. There were no words. Hawk growled at her slight at him.

  “I can take care of my mate.” Hawk was on the wrong side of a losing battle. My mother was a veteran- bitch.

  “I’m sure you can. Delivered many babies have you?” I heard his growl die inside his chest.

  “They have midwives for that sort of…” I started and she raised her eyebrows.

  “For pups? Perhaps a vet?” She offered and Hawk started to growl again.

  “It’s not like they come out covered in fur howling at the damn moon.” I scowled. I growled. I hated my mother.

  “She’s right, the pack would normally take care of…” Hawk stopped in mid flow when I gave him my death glare.

  Did he just say my mother was right?

  Was he insane? Handing her that kind of power…

  “There, so even Hawk agrees. I’m staying.” I rolled my head on my neck and my eyes up to my mate. Angry eyes. Death filled eyes. He swallowed.

  “I…” Hawk started and then thought better of it. He cleared his throat and I wanted to wring his damn neck.

  “Oh goody.” Sydney exclaimed. “And you’ll stay here with Joss.”

  My jaw hit the floor. There were no words. Well, there were words, all very explicit that were pinging around in my head like two octopi playing table tennis.

  “Come now, Sydney. We have more room.” Scott swept into my kitchen and saved my very life.

  I loved that man! Well, not quite, but he’d dropped down my to-kill list quite a lot.

  It was Sydney’s turn to squeak and I felt warm and fuzzy inside. Perhaps I could pack up and move out of town before anyone noticed.

  “Ahh, the vampire.” My mother announced as she raised just one eyebrow.

  “And you must be my mate’s other sister.” Scot turned on the charm.

  My mother melted slightly. The day my mother became a gooey mess I’d eat my placenta. Maybe not.

  “I thought vampire’s had twenty-twenty vision.” I muttered and Hawk sniggered. Scott missed a step on the way towards his mate and his eyes shot to mine.

  “Unless you’d rather stay here with Joss.” Scott announced and rebounded right back up the top of my hit list.

  “No. You’re right. This house is a little small.” My mother cast a withering look around her and shot to number one on my hit list with a bullet. If only I had a bullet.

  “Settled then.” Scott beamed as he went to wrap his arms around Sydney and she elbowed him in the stomach. I sniggered.

  Scott had rushed to my rescue and dropped himself into the shit pit. I loved him for it again. The man wasn’t so bad.

  But nine months of my mother? Geez.

  Could there be anything worse than that?
